East African pine is a highly versatile and widely available plantation timber, extensively accepted by the construction and packaging industries.
It produces lumber that is well suited for framing, industrial components, pallets, crates, posts, cladding, decking (when treated), interior trims, and everyday furniture.
Heartwood formation generally begins at around 12–15 years of age.

The most commonly found species in the East African regions of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania & Rwanda are Pinus patula (most dominant), Pinus elliottii, Pinus caribaea.

Long tracheids with excellent length-to-diameter ratio
Resin canals are visible as fine, pale to amber lines within the latewood bands of the growth rings.
Growth rings are wide, due to fast growth.
Sapwood proportion is (65–80%), heartwood formation begins ~12–15 years
